mindfulness
Mindfulness has become mainstream and yet not everyone understands what it really means. People are desperate for relief from their stress but believe meditation means stopping their thoughts, and after a short try they decide it’s not possible. They either give up the idea entirely or, ironically, put it off until they’re less stressed. Having practiced yoga and meditation avidly for more than 30 years, I know very well that it’s impossible to willfully wrestle incessant thoughts into quiet compliance. “Thinking” is what our minds do. However, there is a way to make our thinking feel less like a runaway train. By creating more space between our thoughts and reactions, our minds become a safer place to explore, discover and grow.
